“I could head to McLaren Vale and sit down with Joe Grilli as he opens a bottle of his Joseph Moda. This is a Cabernet Merlot made like an Italian Amarone - he dries the grapes after picking so that they begin to shrivel and a few of them start to split and rot. And my first mouthful is all about Italy and nothing about Australian Cab. I think I’m being faced with a thick mugful of tannic, leathery tannic soup. Hold it in your mouth, patience, wait… and then the wine begins to unfurl – the freshness of the berries and late-summer blackberries binds itself into a richness of prunes and fig syrup and chocolate, while the sweet-sour, cream-curdling acidity of plum skins resonates like a taut guitar string and the tannin is as grippy yet affectionate as the lick of a cat’s tongue.” Oz Clarke (Red & White – An Unquenchable Thirst For Wine 2018 P447)Since 1987, Joe Grilli has produced this exotic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot using the amarone method made famous in Italy. Fruit from the Clarendon vineyard is hung on racks and air-dried prior to crushing, creating a deep, brooding wine with great depth, balance and concentration of flavour.
A regular in the top wines in the Oz Clarke Wine Guide, our experience of older vintages of this wine confirms that this is a sensational wine which fully reward cellaring for up to 15 years.
Haven’t had any Joseph Moda for a while, but this was a delicious reminder. Quite rich and luscious. Very enjoyable return.
Consistently good - I have vintages going back to 1989 - and on a par with some of the highest rated Australian wines. Magnums are especially good if you can leave them alone for at least 6-8 years!
As good as the earler vintage, perhaps better. Deeply satisfying
I love this wine - thick and beautiful just like me!
