"Schaefer Shiraz is the personification of Tim’s irascible, magnetic, and steadfast character, in vinous form.  Inky, powerful and blessed with 12 months spent in new French oak, this is an extremely focussed and hugely opinionated wine with the most affordable price tags I have ever seen for a wine of this build-quality." Matthew Jukes (Moneyweek 23/10/20

"Deep and intense ruby-red colour throughout the glass. Dark berries, bitter chocolate and mint aromatics. Intense black fruits, tapenade and coffee notes show across the full-bodied palate. The tannins focus it where necessary and it lingers long into the finish. Still showing as a youthful wine so will have many years of life ahead of it. 93 points" The Real Review

The Schaefer vineyard is some 10 hectares (30 acres) in size and is 100% Shiraz. It represents something very special, both in regard to the unique, elegant and rich fruit flavours found in the fruit and also the meticulous care and passion shown by the Schaefer family through their twenty years of grape growing.

Tim purchased Shiraz grapes from the vineyard for several years and was aware of the outstanding fruit quality. When he found out that the Schaefer’s were planning to retire, he immediately made them an offer for the vineyard that they couldn’t refuse, so high was his regard for the fruit from the vineyard.

The 2015 vintage is seen as one of the best in the previous decade. This special release wine was made using carefully selected parcels of Shiraz from the vineyard, which then received the “kids gloves” treatment, spending 24 months in new French oak before blending and further ageing in tank. The wine was fined, filtered and bottled in January 2018, before being left to mature in bottle until its release.

The use of new French oak brings wonderful aromas of perfume and spice to the wine. The palate is awash with dark red cherries, plums and red berry aromas and flavours; the smooth tannins lead into a long, finish. This is a wine with great balance which, while drinking beautifully now, will continue to improve for up to 20 years.

Excellent fruit-forward shiraz

Service and delivery from Australian Wine Centre was excellent. The wine itself is nicely aged, though still showing a fruit forward character, which I personally like. Excellent accompaniment to strong meats and cheeses, or for drinking on its own. I suspect it will continue to age gracefully for another 5 years or so.
