This is a great Barossa Cabernet.

Johann Scholz settled at Light Pass, in the eastern reaches of the Barossa Valley in 1845, establishing a mixed farm of sheep, cows, crops and fruit trees as well as a few grape vines along the alluvial bank of the North Para River.

Today, sixth generation Peter Scholz is producing some of the best value wines produced in the Barossa, as was reflected when the Willows won the Best Wine in Show at the 2022 Barossa Wine Show.

The Willow's Cabernet vines were planted over 50 years ago, near to the banks of the North Para River, dotted by gum trees, as it winds it way through the Scholz vineyards. So, it is no surprise to find eucalyptus aromas along with the more classic Cabernet characters on the nose with this wine.

Deep crimson red, the wine has beautifully lifted aromas of blackcurrant, spiced cherry and mint chocolate. The palate delivers weight and fruit generosity with mouth-watering flavours of chocolate, berry, mint and eucalypt characteristics and savoury spice adding further depth and complexity.

The finish is long with silky tannins and a rich finish. It is drinking beautifully now and will cellar well for another 5 years or so.

Unique flavour

So pleased to have found this wine again. First tasted in restaurant in New Zealand many years ago and liked it so much we went without pudding and got a second bottle instead! Lucky enough to also visit the vineyard and see the blue gum trees that give the distinctive eucalyptus and mint flavours. Possibly not to everyone’s taste but we love it. Excellent and speedy delivery too.
