The 2021 Peter Lehmann ‘The Barossan’ Grenache has swept the board in Aussie Wine Competitions, winning 4 Gold Medals and finishing runner-up in the James Halliday Grenache Challenge to a wine that sells for twice the price.

Enticing aromas of raspberries, maraschino cherries and peppery spices are followed by a palate of delicious red raspberry fruit, with supple tannins helping to draw out a smooth, lingering finish.

The late Peter Lehmann has a justifiable reputation as the man who saved the Barossa wine industry.

The late 1970s were difficult times for the Barossa wine grape growing community as the region was hit with a severe grape surplus. Companies refused to buy grapes and honour contracts, and Peter Lehmann knew this would destroy the livelihoods of some 140 family growers.

Peter Lehmann stepped up to create a wine that not only sourced local grapes, but embodied the spirit of the local community. With his vision and actions paving a way forward to benefit everyone, creating a wine legacy like no other.

His name is synonymous with rich, Barossa reds which have made the region famous. So it was no surprise when the 2021 The Barossan Grenache was named runner-up in the 2021 James Halliday Grenache Challenge from a field of 160 wines.

The Barossa Valley has consistently produced Grenache since the first vines were planted in the 1800s. The unique Barossan soil imparts a bright savoury spice to the fruit making for a complex, yet moreish, drop.

The 2021 vintage was idyllic. The season began with warm weather and average rainfall, which was replenished again in late January preparing the soil for a cool, dry March which allowed for slow and steady ripening on the vine.

2021 Peter Lehmann ‘The Barossan’ Grenache 14.5%  6x75  £114.00

With purple hues and a bright crimson edge, this wine is extremely fragrant, revealing aromas of fresh raspberries, maraschino cherries and peppery spices. The palate is medium-bodied with flavours of juicy berries and soft tannins, with exotic subtleties of pomegranate and rose.

Supple tannins lead into a long, lingering finish. It is drinking beautifully now and will improve in the bottles over the next five years or so.
