The latest release of Leigh Eldredge’s Blue Chip Shiraz, from the 2017 vintage, shows why this sought-after wine is amongst the country’s best value Shiraz.

Blue Chip is a single vineyard Shiraz, produced from Eldredge’s spectacular Clare Valley vineyard, situated some 500 metres above sea level. It is perched right at the edge of the Clare, where the land falls away quite sharply to the Blyth Plains below. This unique location ensures that the vineyard is exposed to the gentle sea breezes from the nearby St. Vincent’s Gulf, which cool the vineyard throughout the hot summer and produces the elegant fruit that goes into this flavoursome Shiraz.

Dark brick red in colour with purple hues. It has ripe blueberry and blood plum fruits, with overtones of spice, cream and black pepper. The wine is perfectly balanced and as it is left to breathe liquorice and leather notes come to the fore. The palate is delicious, with satisfying soft tannins and a long finish. It is very approachable early in its life and will improve in the bottle for over a decade.
